Severe cyclonic storm Arnab has caused significant disruption in coastal Andhra Pradesh as the system approaches the final stage of landfall. Strong winds, heavy rainfall and high sea waves have affected normal life, uprooted trees and left several roads waterlogged.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the storm's centre is located near the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. Dr K. Nagaratna, director of the Amaravati Meteorological Centre, said coastal areas were experiencing winds of 125 to 135 kmph, with gusts potentially reaching 150 kmph.
Sea waves as high as 2.5 metres have been reported along the Kakinada and Yanam coasts, raising concerns about seawater entering low-lying areas.
Flash Flood Alerts Issued in 16 Districts
The state government has issued flash flood alerts in 16 districts, including Bapatla, Guntur, Krishna, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari and West Godavari.
Authorities have suspended traffic at RK Beach in Visakhapatnam and advised fishermen not to venture into the sea as weather conditions remain dangerous.
Strong winds have uprooted trees at several locations in Visakhapatnam, while heavy rainfall has caused waterlogging on roads in Vijayawada, disrupting movement and daily activities.
2,199 Cyclone Relief Camps Set Up
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said the government was continuously monitoring the situation and had made extensive arrangements to respond to the cyclone.
A total of 2,199 cyclone relief camps have been established across the state. For relief and rescue operations, 12 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and 10 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed across 14 districts.
The administration has also kept 1,087 medical teams, 1,274 ambulances and emergency beds ready to deal with potential emergencies. Pregnant women have been moved to hospitals considered safe.
Flights Cancelled, Residents Asked to Stay Indoors
The cyclone has also disrupted air travel, with flights cancelled at Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Rajahmundry airports.
The Meteorological Department has urged residents to remain indoors until wind conditions improve. People have also been advised to avoid standing near electricity poles or under large trees because of the risk posed by strong winds and falling branches.
With heavy rain, powerful winds and possible flooding threatening coastal and low-lying areas, authorities are continuing preparedness and emergency response measures as Cyclone Arnab affects Andhra Pradesh.
