The Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan), one of Punjab’s largest farmers’ organisations, has launched statewide protests outside 48 police stations over the alleged forcible removal of Daljit Singh’s body by the police.
BKU leader Shingara Singh said demonstrations were underway at 48 locations across Punjab. He added that a group of protesters was leaving Barnala to join the agitation.
Senior union leader Jhanda Singh Jethuke said the protests would be held from 11.30 am to 4 pm on Wednesday. He demanded that the authorities hand over Daljit Singh’s body to his family without delay.
“The body of the deceased must be handed over to the family without any delay. It is their prerogative to decide how and when they want to cremate him. Why should the police interfere?” Jethuke said in a video message.
Daljit Singh’s Family Alleges Drug Overdose
Daljit Singh, a resident of Bhamme Kalan village in Sardulgarh, died under mysterious circumstances. His family and supporters had been attempting to take his body to the protest site near the Mansa Deputy Commissioner’s residence, where an agitation is underway over the killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota.
According to the report, the police allegedly took Daljit Singh’s body away on Tuesday while his family and supporters were trying to bring it to the protest site.
The family has alleged that Daljit Singh died of a drug overdose and claimed that drugs were easily available in Mansa district. His body is currently at AIIMS Bathinda.
BKU Urges Farmers to Join Demonstrations
Jethuke appealed to farmers and union members to set aside their other engagements and participate in the demonstrations. He said the organisation would mobilise supporters across Punjab against what it described as police excesses.
The union has also announced that a large contingent of its supporters will travel to Mansa to join the ongoing protest being held by the family and supporters of Parvinder Singh Jhota.
Family Demands Right to Decide on Last Rites
Daljit Singh’s family has demanded that its right to decide how and when to conduct his last rites be respected. The dispute over the handling of his body has added to the tension in Mansa, where the protest over Parvinder Singh Jhota’s killing is already underway.
The statewide demonstrations announced by BKU Ekta Ugrahan are expected to widen the agitation, with protesters gathering outside police stations over the alleged removal of the body and the family’s demand for its immediate handover.
