Swine Flu Cases Surge in Delhi, Total Infections Cross 1,770
Swine flu cases are rising rapidly in the national capital, with Delhi recording 114 new cases in the last 24 hours. The total number of infected patients reported so far this year has reached 1,777, which is around seven to eight times higher than the 229 cases recorded last year. The infection is affecting people across age groups, from young children to elderly citizens. As of August 6, Delhi had reported 1,344 H1N1 cases. This means 433 additional cases were recorded within 14 days. However, the Delhi Health Department has not yet released details about the hospitals where the 114 patients reported on August 20 were diagnosed. Doctors said the strain responsible for swine flu can change every few years, potentially reducing immunity against the infection. Like COVID-19, swine flu is a viral infection, and maintaining hand hygiene and using masks are considered useful preventive measures. According to medical experts, changing weather conditions during the monsoon, overcrowding in homes and other enclosed spaces, increased use of air conditioners and inadequate ventilation can contribute to the spread of influenza infections. For otherwise healthy people, the infection generally resolves without major complications. However, it can become more serious among elderly people, pregnant women, young children and those already suffering from other illnesses. Meanwhile, infectious disease specialist Dr Neha Rastogi Panda has also reported an increase in patients showing symptoms associated with influenza and flu-like illnesses.
