New Sports Facilities Aim to Channel Youth Talent and Strengthen Sporting Culture in Punjab

Punjab has launched a major initiative to revive sports culture across the state, with the government focusing on expanding sports infrastructure and encouraging greater participation among young people.
The move comes amid growing efforts to provide constructive opportunities for the youth. Recognising the need to channel young people's energy into positive activities, the Punjab government has undertaken several measures aimed at strengthening sports at the grassroots level and creating better opportunities for aspiring athletes.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the state has set a target of building 3,100 sports grounds and stadiums across villages and urban areas. As part of the initiative, a large number of sports facilities have already been dedicated to the public, providing young athletes with greater access to training and recreational spaces.
The government has allocated significant financial resources for the development of sports infrastructure, reflecting its commitment to promoting athletics throughout the state. Officials believe that the availability of modern sports grounds, gyms and training facilities at the village level will naturally encourage more young people to take up sports.
Sports are widely regarded not only as a means to improve physical fitness but also as a way to instill discipline, confidence and teamwork among youth. The development of accessible sporting facilities is expected to create an environment that supports both recreational participation and competitive excellence.
In addition to building infrastructure, the state government has introduced incentives aimed at motivating athletes. Cash rewards and opportunities for government employment have been extended to sportspersons who have achieved notable success at various levels of competition.
Recently, athletes who won a combined 1,070 medals across different competitions were honoured with cash awards worth crores of rupees. The recipients included 87 winners of the prestigious Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award.
The government has also announced substantial financial rewards for medal winners at the Olympic Games and Asian Games. Alongside these incentives, several athletes have been provided government jobs in recognition of their achievements.
To further support elite performers, financial assistance for tournament preparation is being transferred directly into athletes’ bank accounts. The initiative aims to ensure that talented sportspersons receive the resources needed to train and compete effectively at national and international levels.
The government's sports development programme is being viewed as a long-term effort to strengthen Punjab’s sporting ecosystem, increase youth participation and create pathways for future champions from across the state.
