Narendra Modi Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in India's history. On June 10, Prime Minister Modi achieved the distinction of being the country's longest-serving elected head of government, surpassing the record previously held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Prime Minister Modi has completed a continuous tenure of 4,399 days in office, exceeding Nehru’s record of 4,398 days. Modi first took oath as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014. His second term began on May 30, 2019. Following another decisive victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Modi was sworn in for a third consecutive term as Prime Minister on June 9, 2024. With the completion of 4,399 days in office, he has now set a new benchmark as the longest-serving elected Prime Minister of the country. The milestone has drawn appreciation from American lawmakers, business leaders, and prominent members of the Indian diaspora. Many credited Modi’s leadership with enhancing India’s global standing and strengthening relations between India and the United States. U.S. Senator John Cornyn congratulated Prime Minister Modi on completing 4,399 days in office. In his message, Cornyn said that Modi’s achievement reflected the trust placed in him by 1.4 billion people through three democratic mandates and congratulated him on becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister.
