Jailed MP Amritpal Singh Seeks Lok Sabha Speaker’s Permission to Attend Monsoon Session

Jailed Khadoor Sahib Member of Parliament (MP) Amritpal Singh has sought permission from the Lok Sabha Speaker to attend the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, scheduled from July 20 to August 13, 2026. The request was revealed through a letter made public by his father, Tarsem Singh. According to Tarsem Singh, despite being elected as an MP in 2024, Amritpal Singh has not been allowed to attend any session of Parliament. He stated that the restrictions have prevented his son from raising issues concerning his constituency and fulfilling his responsibilities as an elected representative. Tarsem Singh also alleged that Amritpal Singh has been denied access to Members of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) funds, which, according to him, has affected development works in the Khadoor Sahib constituency. He further claimed that even after the National Security Act (NSA) was revoked, Amritpal Singh continues to remain lodged in the Central Jail at Dibrugarh, Assam. According to Tarsem Singh, the continued detention has prevented him from carrying out his constitutional duties as a Member of Parliament. In his application to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Amritpal Singh stressed the need to participate in the Monsoon Session to raise several important public issues. He identified the growing drug menace in Punjab, the threat of floods during the monsoon season, and the deteriorating law and order situation in the state as matters requiring immediate national attention. He also argued that his participation in Parliament was essential to ensure that the voices of nearly 20 lakh voters from his constituency are represented in the House. In the letter, Amritpal Singh stated that the worsening law and order situation in Punjab, particularly in his constituency, was a matter of serious concern. He wrote that incidents of extortion, robbery, and kidnapping were increasing, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among the public. According to him, these issues require urgent discussion in Parliament, and as the elected representative of his constituency, it is his duty to present them before the House. Amritpal Singh further stated that he had previously made several requests seeking permission to attend Parliament but had not been granted approval. In his latest appeal, he once again requested permission to attend the upcoming Monsoon Session and said that any reasonable conditions deemed appropriate could be imposed to facilitate his participation. He maintained that this would enable him to effectively discharge his constitutional responsibilities as a Member of Parliament.
