Chandigarh University beats University of Calicut to win All India Inter University Rugby Championship (Men) 2024-25
Chandigarh - Chandigarh University (CU) has clinched the All India Inter University Rugby Championship (Men) 2024-25 by registering impressive wins in the final matches of both Rugby Sevens and 15s categories held at the CU campus on Friday. In the 15-a-side version, Chandigarh University's Rugby team defeated the University of Calicut in the final match by a convincing margin of 10-3. In the 7-a-side version, the Chandigarh University team defeated KIIT University, Bhubaneswar by 10-7 to win the title in the category. In all, 57 teams from universities from all over India participated in this five-day tournament. Displaying their all-round supremacy, Chandigarh University’s Rugby teams entered the finals of the Championship with impressive wins throughout the tournament. In the Rugby 15s, Chandigarh University’s team registered a one-sided victory in their first match by defeating Nirwan University, Jaipur by massive margin of 45-0. Chandigarh University defeated Lovely Professional University team by 30-0 in the quarter-finals to secure their place in the semi-finals of the tournament. In the semi-final, Chandigarh University defeated Shivaji University, Vidyanagar, Kolhapur by 34-0 on Thursday. In the Rugby Sevens, Chandigarh University’s Rugby Team defeated LNCT University, Bhopal by 39-0 in its first match. In the second match, Chandigarh University defeated Nirvana University, Jaipur by 47-0 in pre-quarter final. In the quarter-final, Chandigarh University defeated Lucknow University by 24-0 to book their place in the semi-final. In the semi-final match, Chandigarh University defeated Calicut University by 19-0 before defeating KIIT University, Bhubaneswar by 10-7 in the final match to win the title. In the third place match in the 15-player category, Mumbai University defeated Shivaji University, Vidyanagar, Kolhapur by 39-10. In the Rugby Sevens, Calicut University defeated Mumbai University in a close match by 19-17. The five-day All India Inter University Rugby Championship 2024-25 was organized by Chandigarh University under the auspices of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi. About 900 players and officials representing universities all over India participated in this Men’s Rugby 15s and Men’s Rugby 7s championship supported by Rugby India, the sole governing body for the sport of Rugby in India.All matches of the championship are being live streamed on YouTube (https://sportvot.com/stream).
