1. Attack on Sikh Truck Driver Raises Safety Concerns Among Punjabi Community in US

A 28-year-old Punjabi Sikh truck driver from Sacramento, California, was seriously injured after being stabbed 17 times at a rest area in Wyoming, the United States. The attack left him with injuries to his neck, chest, arms and ribs, requiring hospitalisation.

According to a report by NPR, the driver, identified as Gurwinder Singh, had requested that his surname alone be used. He was attacked early Sunday inside a restroom at the Bitter Creek Rest Area along Interstate 80 while travelling towards Pennsylvania.

Driver Attacked Inside Restroom

Singh told NPR that he had stopped at the rest area to use the restroom when another man entered and suddenly attacked him with a knife.

Despite being stabbed repeatedly, Singh managed to escape from the restroom. However, he collapsed outside and called for help.

A Spanish family at the rest area heard the commotion and rushed to assist him. The family tried to help with his injuries and alerted the authorities. They also provided police with information about the suspect’s truck.

Acting on the information, the Wyoming Highway Patrol stopped the vehicle near Rawlins, approximately 113 kilometres from the rest area, and arrested the suspect, identified as Andrew Chris Buzdak.

Buzdak has been charged with attempted first-degree murder. Authorities have not established a motive for the attack.

Driver Expresses Concern for Sikh Truckers

Singh, who has been working as a commercial truck driver for nearly three years, remained in hospital until Wednesday, according to the report.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of Punjabi Sikh truck drivers travelling across the United States. Singh said the attack had left him worried about the security of other drivers from the community.

Attack Follows Controversial DHS Poster

The stabbing took place days after the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) faced widespread criticism over an AI-generated, movie-style graphic featuring a Sikh man identified as “Mr. Singh”.

Titled “Transformers: Age of Deportations”, the poster showed a large Transformer bearing DHS insignia facing a Sikh man wearing a head covering.

The graphic carried the message: “America is for Americans. Get off our roads; you can’t drive, Mr. Singh.” It also urged the person depicted to “self-deport”.

The image was published as part of the Trump administration’s messaging on illegal immigration and immigrant truck drivers. Following widespread criticism, the poster was removed.

However, authorities have not confirmed any connection between the stabbing and the controversial graphic.

Indian-American Congressman Condemns Attack

Indian-origin Democratic Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi condemned the stabbing and expressed concern over what he described as growing hostility towards Indian and South Asian immigrants in the United States.

In a post on X, Krishnamoorthi said he was shaken by the “horrific attack” on a Sikh truck driver who had been stabbed 17 times at a Wyoming rest stop.

He also criticised the DHS poster, saying it had appeared amid growing hostility towards Sikh and South Asian Americans.

Sikh-American News Anchor Criticises DHS Graphic

Sikh-American news anchor Alec Nolan of Fox 7 Austin described the DHS graphic targeting people with the surname Singh as “racist and offensive”.

Recalling his family’s history in the United States, Nolan said his grandfather, Dan Singh, was the son of Katha Singh, who had immigrated to America from India decades ago.

The stabbing has heightened concerns among Sikh and South Asian communities in the United States. However, authorities have not disclosed a motive for the attack, and no link between the stabbing and the DHS poster has been confirmed.
