Members of the Ghadri Shaheed Baba Bhan Singh Youth Sabha staged an effigy-burning protest against the Central Government, raising slogans over the alleged police action against protesters at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
The demonstration was held in response to the reported use of force against youths, students and journalists who were preparing to stage a sit-in demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Youth Sabha president Advocate Harpreet Zirakh and general secretary Rakesh Azad alleged that the government and the Delhi administration had used coercive measures to prevent people from exercising their constitutional right to peaceful protest.
They claimed that, in an attempt to suppress the movement, authorities had stopped trains and metro services to Delhi and suspended internet services, allegedly to prevent information about the events from reaching the public.
Allegations of an Attack on Press Freedom
Zirakh alleged that the arrest of more than 23 journalists by the police amounted to a direct attack on press freedom.
He further accused the Modi government of seeking to keep constitutional institutions, including the Election Commission, under its control to remain in power. He claimed that the deletion of votes belonging to millions of people was undermining constitutional democracy.
The leaders said the alleged suppression of public dissent and the use of police action against protesters would not be tolerated.
Demand to Scrap SIR Process
The protesters also criticised the Centre over its handling of economic issues and employment, alleging that the Modi-RSS government was using false police cases to silence public voices.
They demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the cancellation of what they described as the illegal Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
Several activists attended the demonstration, including Tajinder Kumar, Meenu Sharma, Jagjit Singh, Gurjot Laltton, Hardeep Singh, Maan Singh, Parnil, Gurreet, Rajiv Kumar and Partap.
The allegations against the government and the Delhi administration were made by the protest organisers.
