Punjab Local Bodies’ Tenure Ends, Fresh Elections Expected by June
The tenure of 102 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, along with 9 municipal corporations, has officially ended in Punjab, prompting immediate administrative changes across the state. Following the completion of their term, Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) in the respective areas have been appointed as administrators to take charge of the functioning of these local bodies. According to official information, this interim arrangement is expected to remain in place until May–June 2026, by which time fresh elections are likely to be conducted and newly elected local bodies will be constituted. As per a government notification, administrators have been deployed in various cities to ensure that there is no disruption in the functioning of local governance and that essential public services continue without interruption.
