Mansukh Mandaviya Urges Sports Federations to Deliver Results After Asian Games

India’s performance in athletics and badminton at the Asian Games, where the country fell short of medal expectations, came under scrutiny at a review meeting convened by the Union Sports Ministry. Questions were also raised over the participation of athletes who were dealing with injuries.

The meeting was chaired by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and attended by Minister of State for Sports Raksha Khadse, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha, Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao and representatives of national sports federations.

India won a total of 85 medals, including 21 gold, at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

A senior official who attended the meeting said Mandaviya made it clear that there had been no shortage of resources and that sports federations could not complain about financial support.

“The federations will have to deliver results on the field rather than merely making presentations,” the official said, adding that the federations presented their views and were asked by the minister to begin planning for future competitions without delay.

During the meeting, PT Usha raised concerns about injuries affecting key athletes, including hurdler Jyothi Yarraji and triple jumper Praveen Chithravel.

In response, Mandaviya said the focus should remain on the overall performance of the federations rather than on individual cases. He also stressed that every federation must take its responsibilities seriously.

The review meeting focused on India’s medal performance and the need for sports federations to plan ahead and deliver better results in future competitions.
