A 25-year-old woman in Spain, Noelia Castillo, ended her life through euthanasia on Thursday after a prolonged legal battle with her father, who had opposed her decision. Noelia, a resident of Barcelona, had been the victim of a rape by three men in 2022. Following the incident, she attempted suicide by jumping from the fifth floor. Although she survived, she sustained severe spinal injuries that left her paralyzed from the waist down. Since then, she had been suffering from continuous physical pain and mental distress. In 2024, Noelia applied for euthanasia, which was approved by the Catalonia government. However, her father challenged the decision in court at the last moment, leading to a halt in the process. Along with her father, an ultra-conservative group known as Christian Lawyers also opposed her request, arguing that her mental condition did not allow her to make an informed decision about ending her life. The case proceeded through multiple courts for nearly one and a half years. During this period, doctors and medical experts assessed her condition and stated that she was enduring severe and persistent pain with minimal chances of recovery. A government agency also approved her request for euthanasia. Despite this, her father continued to challenge the ruling, and the matter eventually reached the European Court of Human Rights. The court examined whether Noelia was mentally capable of making her own decisions, whether she was under any external pressure, and whether her request met legal requirements. After reviewing all aspects, the court ruled that she had the right to decide about her own life, thereby clearing the way for euthanasia under established procedures. Noelia was granted assisted death as per her request. The euthanasia procedure involved three injections— the first two induced deep unconsciousness, and the third stopped her heart. She had expressed a wish to be alone at the time of her death and did not want anyone to witness her final moments.
