The United States has urged Canada and its European NATO allies to increase the number of warships, drones, and naval assets available to support NATO’s defense capabilities. The appeal comes at a time when the administration of US President Donald Trump is reducing the military resources that the United States makes available to NATO. As a result, allied nations are being asked to assume a larger share of responsibility within the alliance. NATO’s senior commander, Alexus Grynkewich, said that European countries and Canada will need to take on greater responsibilities in supporting the alliance’s defense requirements. According to the commander, the United States is reducing the availability of fighter aircraft, aerial refueling aircraft, drones, and warships. This shift is expected to require NATO partner nations to contribute additional military capabilities to help maintain the alliance’s operational readiness. NATO has assured member countries that the changes will not create any significant gap in the alliance’s defense posture. The organization stated that other member states possess the necessary capabilities to help offset the reduction in US military resources and maintain collective security commitments. The discussion highlights NATO’s ongoing efforts to balance defense responsibilities among its members while ensuring that the alliance remains prepared to meet evolving security challenges.
