Reduced Supply of Commercial Gas Cylinders Hits Hotel Industry

16 Mar, 2026 09:12 AM

An increasing shortage of LPG cylinders has been reported in Punjab, with the situation worsening amid rising tensions in the Middle East. People have been gathering outside gas agencies early in the morning, forming long queues in hopes of obtaining cylinders. Many residents are forced to wait for several hours before their turn arrives, while in some cases people have had to return home empty-handed due to limited availability. The situation has also led to growing concern among consumers, especially as online booking services for gas cylinders have not been functioning. Despite the anxiety among the public, the Punjab government has appealed to residents not to panic over the supply situation. According to available information, the reduced supply of commercial gas cylinders has begun affecting the hotel and hospitality industry. At present, the supply of commercial cylinders has reportedly fallen to nearly one-third of the usual levels. As a result, several hotel and dhaba operators have either reduced their daily menu or made alternative arrangements to continue operations. During this period, individuals involved in refilling gas cylinders in the open market have reportedly started black marketing. A labourer stated that he usually gets one kilogram of gas refilled for around ₹90. However, due to the shortage of cylinders, he recently had to pay ₹150 for one kilogram of gas. Meanwhile, the administration has been closely monitoring cases of hoarding and black marketing of LPG cylinders. Acting on directions from the Punjab government, deputy commissioners across the state have been instructed to keep strict watch on such activities. Administrative officials have also been conducting raids and taking action against those found involved in hoarding.
