Ishan Kishan Reveals Cousin’s Death Before Final, Dedicates T20 World Cup Win to Her
Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has revealed an emotional personal tragedy that occurred just before India’s triumph in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. The cricketer said that his cousin sister died in a car accident just one day before the tournament’s final. Kishan dedicated India’s historic victory to her memory. Speaking after the team’s win, Kishan shared that the loss deeply affected him, but he chose to play the final in her honour. He said the moment carried even greater significance because the victory coincided with International Women's Day. “I played that match in her memory. Since it was also Women’s Day, the win became even more special,” he said. Kishan also acknowledged the support he received from teammate Hardik Pandya during the difficult period. According to Kishan, Pandya encouraged him to stay strong and remain focused on the team’s performance despite the personal loss. The wicketkeeper-batter delivered an impressive performance throughout the tournament. He finished as the fourth-highest run scorer, accumulating 317 runs in nine matches at an outstanding strike rate of 193.29. His tally included three half-centuries, playing a key role in India’s successful campaign. Kishan also spoke about a change in his mindset, saying he now focuses on his role rather than overthinking situations. He said he tries to adopt an approach similar to that of Virat Kohli, concentrating only on the job at hand. He further recalled an interesting conversation with India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav during the tournament. Kishan said the skipper had expressed confidence in him and entrusted him with the responsibility of helping the team win the World Cup.
