The Trump administration has proposed a major new fee for certain H-1B visa applications, a move that could significantly increase the cost for foreign nationals seeking employment in the United States, particularly Indian professionals. Under the proposal, an additional fee of $103,265, equivalent to around Rs 99 lakh, could be imposed on H-1B visa applications that fall within the annually prescribed visa cap. The proposal would also cover the additional 20,000 H-1B visas reserved for individuals who have obtained a master’s degree or a higher qualification from a US university. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued the proposal on Monday. It has also been published on the US government's official Federal Register website. One of the key aspects of the proposal is that the proposed $103,265 charge would be separate from the existing H-1B application fees. This means that applicants or their sponsoring companies could potentially have to pay the proposed amount in addition to the fees already applicable to H-1B applications. The proposed fee would apply to H-1B applications that fall within the annual visa cap. However, certain categories of H-1B applications that are exempt from the annual cap would not be subject to the proposed additional fee. The proposal has once again brought the issue of H-1B visa costs into focus. The H-1B is a US work visa that allows American companies to hire foreign nationals with specialised skills and qualifications.
