Elderly NRI Couple Killed in Road Accident Near Panipat While Traveling to Amritsar

A tragic road accident occurred near Panipat on the Delhi–Amritsar National Highway, where an elderly NRI couple lost their lives after their taxi collided with a parked truck. The accident took place near the Rohtak bypass close to a Jio petrol pump. According to reports, the incident occurred on Tuesday when a speeding taxi rammed into a truck that was standing in the middle lane of the highway. Due to dense fog, the driver reportedly could not see the vehicle ahead, leading to the collision. The impact of the crash was so severe that the taxi was completely destroyed, and the elderly couple died on the spot. The deceased have been identified as Ranjit Singh Sandhu (63) and his wife Satinder Kaur (61). According to reports, the couple owned a major transport business in the United States. They had arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport from the United States and hired a taxi to travel to Amritsar. The accident happened around 5:40 am when the taxi reached Panipat. Because of the heavy fog, the driver was unable to see the truck parked in the middle lane, resulting in the fatal crash. Family members revealed that the circumstances leading to the tragedy were deeply unfortunate. The couple had initially booked a direct flight to Amritsar. However, their tickets were cancelled due to the US–Israel conflict. They later booked tickets to Delhi and decided to travel to Punjab by taxi, a journey that ultimately became their last. The family’s story is particularly heartbreaking. The couple’s only son had died of a heart attack six years ago. Following the accident, their only surviving child is their daughter, who lives in the United States and has now lost both parents. Meanwhile, the taxi driver miraculously survived the crash. After the incident, the truck driver reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled from the scene. Police reached the spot after receiving information and took custody of the bodies. Post-mortem examinations were conducted at Civil Hospital Panipat, after which the bodies were handed over to the family. Police have registered a case against the unidentified truck driver for negligent parking and causing death by negligence. Authorities are currently searching for the truck owner and the absconding driver based on the vehicle’s registration number.
