Canada Immigration Challenges: Punjabi Youth Face Financial Stress and Uncertainty Over Permanent Residency

Several Punjabi youths who moved to Canada with hopes of building a better future are facing growing uncertainty over their immigration status, employment and financial stability. Increasing difficulties in securing permanent residency (PR), along with changing immigration policies and stricter government regulations, have added to the challenges faced by many young immigrants.

Two disturbing incidents involving Punjabi youths were reported during the first four days of November. In one case, 24-year-old Simranjit Singh, who lived in Brampton, died after coming under a train. A day later, another young man in north Surrey suffered serious injuries in a shooting incident and remains under treatment at a hospital.

According to the information available, Simranjit Singh had made several attempts to obtain permanent residency in Canada. He had reportedly paid between 60,000 and 70,000 Canadian dollars to a trucking company in connection with a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), hoping that it would help him secure permanent residency.

However, his efforts proved unsuccessful. By the time his application was due to be submitted, the owner of the trucking company had declared the business bankrupt. The employer allegedly refused to return the money received from Simranjit.

LMIA-Related Allegations and Financial Losses

The report stated that although the Canadian government did not charge employers for obtaining an LMIA to recruit foreign workers, some employers allegedly turned the process into a business by demanding money from workers under the promise of helping them secure permanent residency.

Following complaints about such practices, the government discontinued the relevant arrangement last year. Simranjit also made other attempts to obtain PR, but none succeeded. After facing repeated setbacks and disappointment, he died by suicide.

Surrey Shooting Incident Under Investigation

Meanwhile, the identity of the young man injured in the Surrey shooting has not yet been made public by the police.

According to the initial information shared during the investigation, there are suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident. Further details are expected to emerge after the injured man regains consciousness and police are able to establish what happened.

People familiar with the matter said the youth had reportedly been under stress because of financial debts.

Immigration Uncertainty Among Punjabi Youth

Similar incidents have also been reported in the past, raising concerns about the difficulties faced by some Punjabi immigrants in Canada.

According to estimates cited in the report, around 200,000 to 250,000 Punjabi youths are currently living in Canada without legal immigration status. Many reportedly failed to get their work permits renewed, while the refugee claims of several others were rejected.

The situation has also raised concerns about immigration agents who allegedly exploit vulnerable applicants by making false promises about permanent residency and other immigration opportunities.

After cases of such exploitation came to light, the Canadian government tightened regulations governing immigration agents. The revised provisions include substantial fines and imprisonment for those found violating the rules.

Study Visa Holders Also Facing Uncertainty

In recent months, several young people who entered Canada on study visas have organised protests demanding pathways to permanent residency. However, their demonstrations reportedly failed to bring the desired response from the government.

The lack of clarity over their future has left many of these students disappointed, adding to concerns about the challenges faced by Punjabi youth who move to Canada in search of better educational, employment and settlement opportunities.
