Indian badminton player Tanvi Patri created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games. The 15-year-old put up a determined fight against China's Zhang Yixin in a thrilling three-game final but eventually lost the gold medal match on Thursday night.
The intense contest lasted one hour and 22 minutes, with Patri going down 21-15, 13-21, 24-26 against the reigning world junior champion. Despite the defeat, the young Indian displayed remarkable fighting spirit, saving six match points and creating three opportunities to seal the title.
Speaking after the match, Patri said the achievement meant a great deal to her and would motivate her to perform better in future tournaments. She also revealed that she would participate in an International Challenge tournament in Indonesia next year and hoped to deliver a strong performance.
Before Patri, only two Indian players, HS Prannoy in 2010 and Lakshya Sen in 2018, had won individual silver medals in badminton at the Youth Olympic Games.
In the gold medal contest, Patri initially struggled to find her rhythm in the opening game but staged an impressive recovery. Trailing 3-5, she scored seven consecutive points to take a 10-5 lead. Using her punch clears effectively and displaying excellent control at the net, she secured the first game in 25 minutes.
Patri began the second game strongly, taking an early 4-0 advantage. However, the drift caused by the wind affected her control over clear shots. Zhang gradually gained control of the proceedings after the mid-game interval and levelled the contest by winning the second game.
The deciding game saw Zhang take an early advantage through her trademark cross-court drops, building a commanding 19-10 lead. Patri fought back impressively to reduce the gap to 19-15.
However, an error on a cross-court smash gave the Chinese player five match points. Patri showed tremendous resilience by saving all of them and subsequently earned three opportunities to win the gold medal.
Despite her determined comeback, Zhang's experience proved decisive in the closing stages, as she eventually secured the victory.
Although Patri missed out on gold, her historic silver medal marks a significant achievement for Indian women's badminton at the Youth Olympic Games.
