Defence Ministry Signs ₹53,866-Crore Deals to Build Eight Advanced Warships for Indian Navy

The Ministry of Defence has signed agreements worth ₹53,866 crore for the construction of eight next-generation warships for the Indian Navy. The project aims to strengthen India's maritime capabilities and enhance the Navy's operational preparedness amid China's growing presence in the Indian Ocean region.

The contracts have been awarded to two public sector shipbuilding companies — Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL). Under the agreements, GRSE will construct five warships, while GSL will build the remaining three.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the advanced warships will be equipped with modern missiles, weapons and sophisticated sensor systems. These capabilities will enable them to counter threats across all three operational domains — air, surface and underwater.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the project would provide a significant boost to India's domestic shipbuilding industry. It is also expected to generate substantial employment opportunities over the next 10 years.

The project is likely to create approximately 72 lakh man-days of employment at shipyards and another 460 lakh man-days across ancillary industries and the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector.

In a statement, the Defence Ministry described the initiative as a major milestone in strengthening India's indigenous warship design and manufacturing capabilities. It is the first project of its kind in which the Indian Navy will undertake the design of the warships, while their construction will be carried out entirely within the country.

The eight warships are expected to play an important role in protecting maritime trade routes, conducting anti-submarine operations, strengthening coastal security and enhancing surveillance capabilities at sea.

The project is expected to strengthen India's naval power while supporting domestic defence manufacturing and advancing the country's self-reliance in the defence sector.
