PU Student Death Case: Family, University Reach Settlement; ₹2.1 Million Compensation Announced

The family of Jyoti, the Punjab University student who lost her life due to electrocution on the university campus, has reached an agreement with the university administration. Under the settlement, the family will receive compensation of ₹21 lakh, while the victim's brother will be offered a job at the university. Following the agreement, the family has given its consent for the postmortem examination to be conducted. The last rites of the deceased student will be performed after the postmortem process is completed. The settlement comes a day after Jyoti's death triggered protests by her family and various student organizations, who had been demanding justice and strict action against those responsible for the incident. The demonstrations called for accountability and appropriate legal action over the alleged negligence that led to the tragedy. Meanwhile, student organizations at Punjab University have stated that they will review the FIR registered in connection with the case before deciding their next course of action. They said that if the FIR does not include appropriate legal provisions or action against those responsible for the alleged negligence, they will announce further protests. Although the agreement between the family and the university administration has eased tensions to some extent, student organizations have made it clear that they will continue their campaign until they are satisfied that justice has been ensured.
