Veteran Playback Singer Asha Bhosle Breathes Her Last at 92
Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away at the age of 92 on Sunday afternoon at Breach Candy Hospital. She had been admitted to the hospital on Saturday evening after her health deteriorated. Initial reports indicated that she had suffered a heart attack along with chest-related complications. Earlier, her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, had shared a post on Instagram stating that Asha Bhosle was hospitalized due to extreme fatigue and a chest infection. She had mentioned that treatment was ongoing and expressed hope for recovery. Asha Bhosle had an illustrious career spanning decades, during which she recorded more than 12,000 songs. Many of her songs, including “Dum Maro Dum,” “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja,” and “Chura Liya Hai Tumne,” remain timeless classics and continue to be widely appreciated. Her journey in the music industry was marked by both professional success and personal struggles. She was the daughter of noted classical singer and theatre artist Dinanath Mangeshkar and the younger sister of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. After the death of her father when she was just nine years old, Asha and her sister began singing at an early age to support their family. At the age of 16, she married Ganpatrao Bhosle against her family’s wishes. The marriage led to strained relations with her family, and she faced significant hardships, including domestic violence. During this period, she also experienced deep emotional distress and at one point considered ending her life. In 1960, she separated from her first husband and raised her three children—Hemant, Varsha, and Anand—on her own. Over time, her relationship with her family gradually improved after she returned with her children. In 1980, she married renowned music composer R. D. Burman. The two had first met in 1966 during the recording of a song for the film “Teesri Manzil.” Their professional collaboration evolved into a close friendship and eventually into a personal relationship. According to accounts, R.D. Burman had proposed marriage to Asha Bhosle, but his mother initially opposed the union due to their age difference and her responsibilities as a mother of three. However, following the death of his father, S. D. Burman, and changes in family circumstances, the couple eventually married in 1980. Asha Bhosle’s contribution to Indian music remains unparalleled, and her legacy continues to influence generations of artists and listeners alike.
