Glenn Maxwell Announces Retirement from T20 Internationals, Ends International Career
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to his career in the shortest format. The 38-year-old has decided to step away from T20 Internationals after previously retiring from One-Day International (ODI) cricket in June 2025.
Along with T20I cricket, Maxwell has also retired from List A and first-class cricket. However, he will continue playing in the Big Bash League (BBL), representing the Melbourne Stars. His contract with the franchise runs until the end of the 2027-28 season. He could also feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Maxwell played his final international match against Oman in February this year. The match was Australia's last group-stage fixture in the T20 World Cup.
Maxwell Scored 2,897 Runs in 130 T20 Internationals
Maxwell made his T20 International debut against Pakistan in 2012. During his career, he played 130 matches and scored 2,897 runs, making him Australia's third-highest run-scorer in the format. He also registered five centuries in T20Is.
Former India captain Rohit Sharma has also scored five centuries in T20 International cricket.
Apart from his performances in limited-overs cricket, Maxwell represented Australia in seven Test matches, scoring 339 runs. His only Test century came against India in Ranchi in 2017.
Retirement Discussions Had Been Underway for Some Time
Maxwell revealed that discussions about his international future had been taking place for some time. Speaking on The Final Word podcast, he said the subject had come up both before and after the T20 World Cup.
He clarified that the Australian team management had not pressured him to retire. He also said the possibility of returning to international cricket had remained open.
According to Maxwell, the team wanted to give opportunities to younger players during certain series. A similar approach was followed during Australia's tour of Bangladesh, where the newcomers delivered good performances.
Wanted a Memorable Farewell in Melbourne
Reflecting on his long association with the format, Maxwell said T20 cricket had felt like home to him for the past 15 years.
He had hoped to bring his international career to a memorable close by playing a special match in front of his home supporters in Melbourne. While his international journey has now ended, fans will continue to see him in action for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.
