SIR Controversy: Voter Lists to Be Updated in 17 States and Union Territories

: The Election Commission of India has directed a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in 17 states and Union Territories, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan. The exercise aims to update voter lists, include eligible new voters and correct errors in existing records.

The decision comes amid ongoing controversy and opposition over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. According to the information provided, around 13 crore names have been removed from voter lists across 30 states and Union Territories during the SIR exercise.

The Election Commission said the schedule for the Special Summary Revision would be announced later for states and Union Territories where the SIR process is still underway or has recently been completed.

Young People Turning 18 in 2027 Can Apply

The Commission said the primary objective of the revision is to ensure that electoral rolls contain accurate and updated information. The process will focus on adding the names of eligible voters, correcting errors in existing details and making necessary changes to voter records.

Special attention will also be given to young people who will be eligible to vote for the first time.

Four Qualifying Dates for New Voter Registration

The Election Commission has allowed young people to apply in advance for inclusion in the electoral rolls. Those who turn 18 on January 1, April 1, July 1 or October 1, 2027, will be eligible to submit applications under the announced provision.

This facility is intended to help eligible young citizens begin the registration process so their names can be added to the electoral rolls once they meet the age requirement.

During the Special Summary Revision, existing voters will also be able to check their details and apply for corrections if their names or other information are inaccurate.

The Commission has emphasised that accurate and updated electoral rolls are essential for conducting free and fair elections.
