Customs officials at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi have detected three major smuggling cases over a three-day period from October 24 to 26, seizing gold and narcotics worth approximately Rs 3.84 crore.
The seizures included more than 9.6 kg of cannabis, valued at around Rs 3.37 crore, and 332 grams of gold worth Rs 47.38 lakh. The contraband was recovered from passengers arriving from Bangkok and Sharjah.
Two separate drug-smuggling cases were detected at Terminal 3, leading to the arrest of two passengers who had arrived from Bangkok.
In the first case, on October 24, customs officials recovered 4,229 grams of cannabis worth approximately Rs 1.48 crore during the X-ray screening of a passenger's baggage.
In the second incident, on October 26, officials found another 5,426 grams of cannabis, valued at around Rs 1.89 crore, inside a passenger's trolley bag.
After preliminary examination confirmed the substance as cannabis, cases were registered under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Both passengers were subsequently arrested.
The third case, involving suspected gold smuggling, was detected on October 26. Two passengers arriving from Sharjah were stopped for questioning after crossing the green channel on suspicion.
Although nothing suspicious was found in their baggage, a metal detector alert prompted customs officials to conduct a physical search. During the search, two gold chains concealed inside their undergarments were recovered.
The gold, with a purity of 999, weighed 332 grams and was valued at Rs 47.38 lakh. The chains had been wrapped in black tape and carbon paper to conceal them.
Customs officials seized the gold under the provisions of the Customs Act.
The three cases were detected as part of the department's efforts to prevent the smuggling of narcotics and precious metals through the national capital's international airport.
