Bhagwant Mann Predicts Weak Showing for BJP and SAD in Punjab Elections

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has stirred political discussion with a bold prediction regarding the upcoming Assembly elections in the state. In an interview with a private media house, Mann claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would win only one or two seats in Pathankot district, while the Congress would secure a maximum of nine seats. He also asserted that the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) would fail to open its account in the elections. The Chief Minister made these remarks in written form during the interview. Political observers believe the statement was not based on any scientific data or survey, but appeared to be an attempt to create a favorable atmosphere for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ahead of the ongoing municipal and local body elections in Punjab. Voting for the civic body elections is currently underway, and the results are scheduled to be announced on Friday. Although Bhagwant Mann himself did not campaign for the 1,801 AAP candidates contesting the elections, his mother reportedly campaigned for some candidates. By projecting AAP as the only strong political force in Punjab, the Chief Minister appeared to be trying to boost the morale of party workers. This was seen as important because opposition parties such as the Congress and BJP are giving tough competition to AAP, especially in urban areas. Opposition leaders, however, dismissed Mann’s prediction as mere “motivational rhetoric” aimed at energizing party workers. They alleged that the remarks were intended to divert public attention from issues related to law and order and shortcomings of the state government. The ongoing local body elections are being viewed as a significant indicator of public sentiment, particularly in urban regions where dissatisfaction with the government is believed to be stronger compared to rural areas. Political analysts also noted that by giving the Congress the highest number of seats among opposition parties, Bhagwant Mann has indicated that he considers Congress to be AAP’s primary challenger in Punjab politics. At the same time, by ruling out any significant prospects for the Shiromani Akali Dal and limiting the BJP’s influence to Pathankot, he suggested that despite support from the central leadership and the induction of leaders from other parties, the BJP has yet to establish a strong statewide base in Punjab.
