India has witnessed a significant rise in organ transplants over the past decade, with the total number increasing nearly fourfold, according to government data. The number of transplants has grown from fewer than 5,000 in 2013 to लगभग 20,000 in 2025. The data further indicates that around 18 percent of transplants are now being conducted using organs donated by deceased donors, marking steady progress in the country’s organ donation ecosystem. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, more than 4.8 lakh citizens have registered for posthumous organ and tissue donation through an Aadhaar-based verification system since September 17, 2023. India has achieved an important milestone in the field of organ donation and transplantation, with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) reporting notable advancements in organ donation, allocation, and transplant procedures across the country. In 2025 alone, over 1,200 families came forward to donate the organs of their deceased loved ones. These contributions have helped save thousands of lives and significantly improve the quality of life for many patients. Each donor is now contributing as a multi-organ donor, benefiting multiple recipients. The country has also developed capabilities in performing complex transplants involving organs such as the heart, lungs, and pancreas. India is home to some of the world’s leading transplant professionals and surgeons, achieving results comparable to global standards at a fraction of the cost. NOTTO continues to promote a culture of organ and tissue donation across government institutions and organizations, encouraging multi-organ donation as a right for every family. The progress made under NOTTO’s leadership also strengthens India’s vision of self-reliance in advanced healthcare. It reduces dependence on foreign transplant services and ensures ethical, transparent, and equitable practices within the country.
