Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Responds to Bus Colour Row, Targets Centre’s Foreign Policy

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Central government, criticising what he described as the failure of its foreign policy and accusing it of compromising the country’s sovereignty. Speaking to the media after a Cabinet meeting, Mann responded to a question regarding the United States reportedly allowing India to purchase Russian oil. He said that while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) presents its leaders as “Vishwaguru” (world leaders), the situation suggests they have become “Vishw Chela” (followers of the world). “Do we now need to seek permission from the White House for everything? Has India’s sovereignty ended?” Mann asked, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should clarify the issue. The Chief Minister also stated that the Punjab government would oppose the Electricity Amendment Bill scheduled to be presented in Parliament on March 10. Mann argued that sectors such as electricity, health and education fall under the jurisdiction of states. “We will not tolerate any interference by the Centre in matters that belong to the states. We will strongly oppose it,” he said. Responding to criticism from opposition parties over the colouring of state transport buses in the yellow and blue shades associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Mann clarified that the buses in question are privately owned and operate under the kilometre scheme. He said that bus operators are free to choose any colour they prefer. Questioning the opposition, Mann added that those raising concerns should first explain why amphibious buses purchased for Harike and the state government helicopter had earlier been painted in colours associated with the Akali Dal.
