Chandigarh : Punjab will not conduct the scheduled mock drill under “Operation Shield” on Thursday. Special DGP Sanjeev Kalra, who is also the Commandant General of Home Guards and Director of Civil Defence, communicated this decision in an urgent letter to the Directorate General of Fire Services, Civil Defence, and Home Guards in New Delhi.
The postponement is due to the ongoing Training of Trainers (TOT) for Civil Defence, conducted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The exercise will now take place on June 3 at 19.30 hours in Punjab. Special DGP Kalra emphasised the importance of completing the TOT to ensure the effectiveness and preparedness of civil defence personnel for the upcoming exercise.
Meanwhile, this statewide civil defence exercise will be conducted in Haryana and Rajasthan on May 29 to enhance the states’ emergency preparedness and response capabilities. Sirens will be sounded during the drill, and emergency response systems will also be tested.
The key components of the drill will include activation of air raid sirens and testing of control room communication hotlines with the Indian Air Force. A controlled blackout will also be observed from 8 to 8.15 pm near vital installations, excluding essential emergency services like hospitals, fire stations, and police stations.
