The Central Government has made it clear that the February 28 deadline for implementing SIM binding rules will not be extended. Under the new regulations, it will be mandatory for users to have an active SIM card in their mobile phones from March 1 for messaging applications to function. As per the updated rules, the SIM card inserted in the phone must match the number linked to apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Snapchat, ShareChat, and JioChat. If a mobile device does not contain an active SIM card, these applications will stop working. This means users will no longer be able to operate such apps solely through Wi-Fi on devices without SIM cards. The new rules will also significantly impact users accessing messaging apps on computers or laptops. Under the updated system, WhatsApp logged in on a computer will automatically log out every six hours. Users will then be required to scan a QR code again to regain access. According to the government, these measures are aimed at strengthening digital security and curbing misuse. Officials believe that the changes will help identify cybercriminals and fraudsters more effectively, while also ensuring better protection of user data. The move is being seen as a major step towards enhancing online safety and controlling fake or unauthorised accounts across digital platforms.
