In a startling revelation, Haryana Director General of Police Ajay Singhal disclosed that Pakistan-based cyber criminals attempted to carry out a “digital arrest” scam targeting him and his wife. According to the DGP, the fraudsters made a call using a Pakistani number and displayed the photograph of a police inspector to appear credible. They tried to mislead him through the call. However, upon noticing the foreign number, Singhal became alert and issued a stern warning to the callers. Following this, the cyber criminals reportedly used abusive language. The scammers also attempted to contact his wife, but she had already been cautioned by the DGP to remain vigilant against such suspicious calls. As a result, no harm was caused. Singhal shared details of the incident during a press conference and advised the public to stay cautious against cyber fraud. In response to the growing threat of cybercrime, Haryana Police has launched the Abhedya App to curb fraudulent activities, especially those involving extortion and scam calls originating from foreign numbers. The application enables users to block suspicious international calls and WhatsApp messages, while also allowing trusted numbers when required. The DGP stated that this initiative is the first of its kind in the country. The app is available on both Android and Apple platforms. To test its effectiveness, trials were conducted on 25 to 30 individuals. Additionally, a dedicated unit has been established to tackle such cybercrime cases. The DGP urged citizens to remain cautious of unknown international calls and to immediately report any suspicious activity to the police.
