Stone-Pelting Incident Damages Windows of Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express, Probe Underway

Window panes of three coaches of the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express were damaged after an object, suspected to be a stone, struck the train shortly after it crossed Borkhedi station in Maharashtra on Friday night. Railway authorities said no passenger was injured and no loss was reported in the incident.
The incident involved Train No. 12290, the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express. According to the Railways, the object hit the train at around 8:27 pm on September 25, causing cracks in the windows of coaches A-1, B-2 and B-5.
Videos of the incident circulating on social media show an object flying in from outside and smashing a coach window while passengers were seated and having dinner. The footage quickly gained attention online, raising concerns about passenger safety.
Railway officials said information about the incident was received at approximately 8:46 pm. Following the alert, teams from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) carried out a search operation along the Borkhedi-Sindhi railway section between kilometre markers 803 and 796.
The search teams also examined nearby areas around Borkhedi and Brahmani villages and questioned local residents, including the Police Patil. However, officials said no suspicious individual or concrete evidence linked to the incident was found during the operation.
According to the Railways, escort staff and passengers confirmed that an object or stone had struck the train windows from outside. Authorities are continuing efforts to determine the exact location from where the object was allegedly thrown.
A case was registered against an unidentified individual at 2:55 am on September 26 under Section 153 of the Railway Act. The investigation remains ongoing.
The incident adds to a broader concern over stone-pelting incidents targeting trains across the country. Indian Railways has reported more than 5,000 such incidents, including cases involving Vande Bharat trains, over the past five years. More than 4,000 individuals linked to these incidents have been arrested during this period.
Railway authorities have also spent over Rs 5 crore on repairing train damage caused by stone-pelting. Officials said legal action continues to be taken under relevant provisions of the law to ensure passenger safety and protect railway property.
