Ottawa to Continue Fuel Tax Suspension Through January 2027

( Ottawa)The federal government is preparing to extend the temporary tax relief on gasoline and diesel until the New Year. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne is expected to make the official announcement in Ottawa on Wednesday. According to sources, the suspension of federal taxes on gasoline and diesel will remain in place until January 31, 2027. After that, the taxes will be gradually reinstated rather than imposed all at once, in order to avoid sudden financial pressure on motorists. The tax relief was first introduced in April amid sharp fluctuations in oil prices. Government officials stated that the measure reduced the price of regular gasoline by approximately 10 cents per liter and diesel by 4 cents per liter. On Wednesday morning, the average price of gasoline across Canada was recorded at 172.9 cents per liter. Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre has urged the government to remove all taxes on gasoline and diesel at least until July 1, 2027. He also called for the elimination of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on fuel. Ontario Premier Doug Ford had earlier appealed to the federal government to extend the tax relief on gasoline until the end of the year, citing the need to ease financial burdens on consumers.
