October 10 Protest: Railways Cancels Select Trains to Delhi, Metro Restrictions Under Consideration

Delhi is preparing for heightened security and possible transport disruptions ahead of a proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, October 10. Delhi Police has asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to consider closing entry and exit gates at 57 metro stations from Friday night and reducing train frequency at the identified stations.

Indian Railways has also cancelled Mail and Express trains scheduled to arrive at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations between 4 am and 2 pm on Saturday, citing the possibility of severe road congestion around the stations.

The proposed measures could affect commuters travelling across the national capital, particularly those using public transport to reach central Delhi. Passengers have been advised to check their train and metro service updates before beginning their journeys.

Metro Restrictions May Begin at 9 PM

Delhi Police has requested the DMRC to consider shutting entry and exit gates at 57 metro stations from 9 pm on Friday. The restrictions could remain in place throughout October 10 until the situation returns to normal.

Police have also proposed reducing train frequency at the identified stations as part of the security arrangements.

The stations mentioned in the proposed restrictions include Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk, Janpath, Mandi House, ITO, Delhi Gate, Khan Market, Supreme Court, Indraprastha, INA, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, Kashmere Gate and Karol Bagh, along with several stations in north, south, east and north-east Delhi.

However, the proposed restrictions do not mean that all 57 stations have been confirmed for closure. The final operational decision rests with the DMRC and will depend on the prevailing situation.

Railways Cancels Select Trains on October 10

Indian Railways has cancelled Mail and Express trains scheduled to arrive at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations between 4 am and 2 pm on Saturday.

According to a railway order issued on October 9, trains scheduled to arrive during this period will be cancelled at their originating stations if they depart after 2 pm on Friday. The decision has been taken in view of the possibility of significant road congestion around the railway stations.

Passengers planning to travel to Delhi during the affected period should verify their train status before leaving for the station to avoid inconvenience.

Security Tightened Ahead of Jantar Mantar Protest

The restrictions are being considered ahead of a proposed October 10 demonstration by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and other groups at Jantar Mantar.

The protesters are seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and have raised allegations concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Police have not granted permission for the proposed demonstration and have imposed prohibitory orders in the New Delhi area.

Authorities are preparing for the possibility that groups unable to reach Jantar Mantar may attempt to assemble at other locations in the capital.

Delhi Borders and Transport Hubs Under Watch

Delhi Police has identified the Uttar Pradesh borders in east Delhi and Shahdara, along with routes from Rajasthan in south-west Delhi, as potential entry points for groups travelling towards the protest site.

Barricades are expected to be installed at entry points, while police personnel will monitor the movement of large groups. Bus operators, bookings and destinations are also being checked to identify organised travel towards New Delhi.

Authorities may intervene where necessary to prevent organised groups from reaching the prohibited protest area.

Security arrangements are also being strengthened at airports, railway stations and bus terminals. Travellers could face additional checks and delays depending on the movement of large groups and the security situation.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, more than 26,000 Central Armed Police Forces personnel, along with Delhi Police, are expected to be deployed for the security arrangements.

Commuters Advised to Plan Their Journeys

The combined measures could lead to delays, diversions and additional security checks across parts of Delhi on Saturday. Central Delhi, particularly areas around Jantar Mantar, is expected to face the most significant restrictions.

However, the measures do not amount to a blanket shutdown of the national capital. Routine services, shops, offices and restaurants are not covered by a general closure order.

Retail liquor outlets across Delhi have separately been ordered to remain closed on October 9 and 10 as a preventive law-and-order measure. Licensed restaurants, bars and clubs may continue serving liquor.

With train cancellations confirmed for the specified category and arrival window, and Metro restrictions still under consideration, commuters should check official railway and DMRC updates before travelling on October 10.
