Several parts of Northeast India experienced earthquake tremors on Saturday evening after a quake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale struck the region, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
The earthquake's epicentre was located near Gyalpozhing in Bhutan, approximately three kilometres from the town and at a depth of five kilometres below the Earth's surface.
Officials said the tremors were felt in multiple locations across the northeastern region, including Guwahati and surrounding areas. According to the NCS, the earthquake occurred at 4:01 pm.
The tremors triggered brief panic among residents, prompting many people to step out of their homes, workplaces and commercial establishments as a precautionary measure.
Following the seismic activity, local authorities and disaster management teams began assessing the situation in affected areas to determine whether any casualties or property damage had occurred.
Experts noted that the northeastern region is prone to seismic activity and has experienced earthquakes in the past. However, no reports of major damage or loss of life had been received immediately after the quake.
Officials said the situation remained under control and monitoring efforts were continuing to ensure that any impact of the earthquake was identified and addressed promptly.
The earthquake serves as another reminder of the region's seismic vulnerability, although authorities reported no significant disruptions in the immediate aftermath of the tremor.
