Delhi PG Collapse: MCD Orders Immediate Inspection of All Buildings, Demands Report in 3 Days

In the wake of the fatal building collapse in South Delhi's Satya Niketan area, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has mandated a comprehensive, citywide inspection of structures across all zones. Executive Engineers from the building departments in all zones have been directed to conduct physical inspections of properties in their respective jurisdictions and submit detailed status reports by September 10. The directives follow a major collapse on Sunday involving a five-storey structure being used as a paying guest (PG) accommodation. The tragedy claimed seven lives and left six others injured. Information gathered by the civic body during the ongoing inspection drive will be incorporated into an affidavit to be submitted before the Delhi High Court within ten days. The next judicial hearing regarding the matter is scheduled for September 25. According to civic records, the MCD had conducted a large-scale structural survey across Delhi earlier this year. Out of 2,784,286 properties evaluated during that initial assessment, only 19 buildings were identified as dangerous. Following the Satya Niketan tragedy, the civic body has launched this fresh inspection initiative to re-assess structural safety across the capital.In a parallel law enforcement action, the Delhi Police have arrested the property owner, Urmila Gupta, along with her husband, Hariram Gupta, and their son, Mahesh Gupta, in connection with the five-storey building collapse. Authorities confirmed that a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident remains underway.
