Honey-Trap Case: Navy Personnel Arrested for Allegedly Sharing Military Details With Pakistani Agent

The Andhra Pradesh Police Counter Intelligence (CI) Cell has arrested a 31-year-old Indian Navy personnel for allegedly leaking sensitive military information to a Pakistani intelligence agency, official sources said.

The case is linked to an alleged espionage operation involving a “honey trap” on social media, according to the sources.

The accused, identified as Pradeep Mukherjee, was taken into custody on October 3 from INS Agrani, the Indian Navy’s leadership training centre in Coimbatore. Mukherjee, who is from West Bengal, had joined the Navy in 2014 and was posted with the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam.

At the time of his arrest, Mukherjee was in Coimbatore to attend a management course. He had been staying there for around a week, the sources said.

According to the information available, a Pakistani female intelligence agent had contacted Mukherjee several months ago. Over time, she allegedly used the relationship developed through the internet to obtain sensitive information related to the Indian Navy.

The information allegedly accessed included details about the Navy’s strategic assets, movement of ships and the functioning of the Visakhapatnam base, according to official sources.

The Counter Intelligence Cell is investigating the alleged espionage network and the manner in which the sensitive information was obtained and shared.

The arrest highlights the security risks associated with social media-based approaches, particularly attempts to establish online relationships with personnel who may have access to sensitive military information.
