: Amritpal Singh, the sitting Member of Parliament, may contest the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal, according to sources in Akali Dal Waris Punjab De.
The party is considering fielding Amritpal Singh from two Assembly constituencies, with its electoral strategy reportedly aimed at challenging both leaders in their respective constituencies.
The decision was discussed at a high-level meeting of senior party leaders held in Mohali on Friday. Amritpal Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, and other senior leaders attended the meeting.
According to sources, Amritpal Singh could contest from either the Lambi or Gidderbaha Assembly constituency. The party has also conducted a survey in Lambi in recent days as part of its preparations.
Sources said the party has decided that Amritpal Singh will contest from whichever constituency Sukhbir Singh Badal chooses between Lambi and Gidderbaha. Similarly, Amritpal Singh is expected to enter the electoral contest from the constituency selected by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
Earlier Plan for Rampura Phul Changed
The party had earlier decided to field Amritpal Singh from Rampura Phul. The constituency was considered significant because Sarabjeet Singh, the party’s candidate in the previous Lok Sabha elections from the Faridkot parliamentary constituency, received his highest vote share among Assembly segments from Rampura Phul.
However, the latest meeting reportedly revised that plan. Instead of contesting from Rampura Phul, Amritpal Singh is now likely to be fielded from the constituency where Bhagwant Mann decides to contest.
The party has fielded Gill Raunta from the Rampura Phul constituency.
The proposed strategy could place Amritpal Singh in direct electoral contests against two prominent Punjab political leaders. However, the final constituencies and candidature arrangements will depend on the party’s formal decisions and the constituencies chosen by Mann and Badal.
