Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman arrived in Singapore on Friday for a three-day official visit from October 9 to 11. During the visit, she is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with Singapore’s leadership, global investors and prominent business leaders to strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties.
According to an official statement, Sitharaman will meet Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.
The discussions will focus on key areas of the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and follow-up measures arising from the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR).
Trade, Investment and Technology on the Agenda
The proposed discussions will cover trade and investment, digital financial connectivity, capital markets, taxation, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, skill development and aviation.
Singapore is India's largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI). Between April 2000 and March 2026, investments from Singapore amounted to approximately $194.68 billion, according to the official statement.
Singapore-based institutional investors, including GIC and Temasek, have made substantial investments across various sectors of the Indian economy.
Sitharaman to Meet Global Investment Firms
As part of her investor outreach programme, the finance minister will participate in a roundtable meeting with hedge fund and portfolio fund managers. She will also hold several government-to-business (G2B) meetings with investors, financial institutions and industry leaders.
The meetings are intended to facilitate discussions on India's growth prospects, investment opportunities and changes in the global economic and financial landscape.
Sitharaman is also scheduled to hold one-on-one meetings with senior executives from major global financial institutions, investment firms and healthcare companies.
Those expected to participate in the discussions include chief executives of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC), Temasek Holdings, DBS Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, British International Investment, IHH Healthcare, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group's Asia-Pacific business, B Capital and HPS Investment Partners.
The finance minister will also meet the chairperson of Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken, a board member of Mitsui & Co., and the executive chairman and founding partner of TPG.
NIIF and GIFT City to Feature in Investment Discussions
The official statement highlighted the potential role of platforms such as the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) and GIFT City in expanding Singaporean investors' participation in India through investment vehicles and funds.
The Finance Ministry will coordinate with relevant ministries and industry organisations to connect interested Singaporean investors with Indian companies, financial institutions and state governments. The initiative is aimed at advancing identified investment opportunities.
Strengthening India-Singapore Strategic Partnership
Sitharaman's visit underlines India's efforts to deepen its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Singapore and translate the strong political relationship between the two countries into greater investment, business collaboration and tangible economic outcomes.
The planned meetings are expected to provide an opportunity to discuss cooperation across key sectors and explore avenues for expanding economic engagement between India and Singapore.
