The city of Melbourne has been declared the world’s best city for 2026, achieving the top position in the annual global ranking released by Time Out magazine. The recognition marks a historic milestone, as it is the first time an Australian city has secured the number one spot on the list. The report is based on feedback from more than 24,000 residents along with insights from international urban experts. Out of a list of 50 cities worldwide, Melbourne earned the top ranking due to its vibrant arts scene, rich cultural life, world-class food offerings, and lively entertainment environment. According to the ranking, other Australian cities also featured on the list. Sydney secured the 21st position, while Adelaide was placed at 29th. The 2026 ranking of the world’s top ten cities includes several major global destinations. After Melbourne in first place, Shanghai ranked second, followed by Edinburgh in third position. London secured the fourth spot, while New York City ranked fifth. The list continues with Cape Town at sixth place, Mexico City in seventh, Bangkok in eighth, Seoul in ninth, and Tokyo completing the top ten. The rankings highlight cities that offer strong cultural experiences, high-quality food and nightlife, and an overall dynamic urban lifestyle, making them attractive destinations for both residents and visitors worldwide.
