Tibet Shaken by Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake Amid Region’s History of Major Seismic Events

A strong earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck Tibet on Thursday, according to information released by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

The agency said the earthquake's epicentre was located at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the Earth's surface. However, no immediate reports of casualties, injuries, or property damage were available following the seismic event.

Authorities and monitoring agencies continued to assess the situation as information from the affected region emerged. It was not immediately clear whether the tremors caused any significant disruption in surrounding areas.

Region Has History of Major Earthquakes

Tibet and the wider Himalayan region have experienced several powerful earthquakes over the decades due to their location in one of the world's most seismically active zones.

Among the most significant events in the region was the Assam-Tibet earthquake of August 15, 1950, which recorded a magnitude between 8.6 and 8.7. The earthquake caused widespread devastation across northeastern India and Tibet, resulting in hundreds of deaths in India and triggering large-scale landslides.

Another major earthquake occurred in the Damxung region of Tibet in November 1951, with a magnitude of around 8.0. More recently, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Mainling region in November 2017.

On January 7, 2025, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Tibet's Tingri region, claiming 95 lives, highlighting the continued seismic vulnerability of the area.

As of now, there is no information on whether tremors from Thursday's earthquake were felt in India.
