Punjab Boosts Sustainable Agriculture: State’s Third Bio-Fertilizer Testing Lab Inaugurated in Mohali
In a major step aimed at promoting natural and sustainable farming while ensuring the availability of standard quality inputs for farmers, Punjab Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian inaugurated a state-of-the-art bio-fertilizer testing laboratory at Kalkat Bhawan in Mohali. The minister announced that with this launch, the state's network of three dedicated testing laboratories—set up at a total cost of ₹4.50 crore to guarantee certified and adulteration-free organic fertilizers—is now fully complete. Prior to this facility, two similar laboratories were established in Gurdaspur and Bathinda. These labs are expected to play a crucial role in providing standard products to farmers, safeguarding them against spurious goods, and reducing heavy reliance on chemical fertilizers. Highlighting the broader operational benefits, the laboratories will assist in strict implementation of the Fertilizer Control Order, monitoring manufacturers and dealers, and generating vital data to improve bio-fertilizer strains suited to Punjab's unique agro-climatic conditions. With Punjab's annual consumption of bio-fertilizers estimated between 15,000 and 16,000 metric tonnes/kilolitres and continuing to rise alongside the rapid expansion of organic farming, ensuring strict quality control had become an absolute necessity. The inauguration ceremony was attended by several prominent dignitaries, including Dera Bassi MLA Kuljit Singh Randhawa, Additional Secretary of Agriculture Latif Ahmed, Director of Agriculture Gurjit Singh Brar, and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rural Development) Sonam चौधरी (Chaudhary).
