Georgia Block Party Shooting: Two Dead, Dozens Injured as Police Investigate

Two people were killed and 36 others injured after gunfire erupted during a Homecoming Block Party in Vienna, a city in southern Georgia, early Sunday, authorities said.
The shooting took place during a celebration that spread across four blocks and drew more than 1,000 people. The event was held following a victory by the Dooly County High School football team.
Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy identified the two people killed as 21-year-old Jaquavian Jackson and 23-year-old Makaleb Jackson.
The injured victims were between 14 and 51 years old and were taken to several nearby hospitals for treatment. Chris Hosey, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, said several people had suffered gunshot wounds and that some of the injured remained in serious condition.
According to Sheriff Peavy, more than 50 rounds were fired at two separate locations during the incident.
Witnesses reported hearing what sounded like continuous gunfire similar to that of a machine gun. The shooting triggered panic among people attending the large gathering, with a stampede breaking out as attendees attempted to flee the area.
Dooly County School System Superintendent Sherrod Wilaford clarified that the gathering was not organised by the school. However, additional security measures were put in place at schools in view of the safety of students and their families.
No arrests had been made at the time of the report. Authorities were continuing to investigate the circumstances and motive behind the shooting.
