Simon Katich to Lead Perth Scorchers at GSL 2026 in Adam Voges’ Absence

24 Feb, 2026 03:34 PM

Former Australian cricketer Simon Katich is set to take charge as head coach of the Perth Scorchers for the upcoming Global Super League (GSL) 2026, stepping in for regular coach Adam Voges. The Scorchers will participate in the five-team invitational tournament scheduled to take place in Guyana from July 23 to August 1. However, Voges will be unavailable due to prior commitments as assistant coach of Trent Rockets in The Hundred. Katich, who previously captained the Scorchers to their maiden Big Bash League title in the 2013–14 season, has remained closely associated with the franchise as a list management consultant. He also brings significant coaching experience, having spent five years in charge of Manchester Originals in The Hundred competition. The Global Super League, launched in 2024, is scheduled during a busy international and franchise cricket window. It overlaps with The Hundred and comes between Major League Cricket and the Caribbean Premier League. Alongside the Scorchers, confirmed teams for the tournament include Guyana Amazon Warriors and Desert Vipers, while two additional teams are yet to be finalised. Reports suggest that SA20 champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape were invited but are unlikely to take part. The Scorchers are expected to assemble the strongest possible squad, although player availability may be affected by overlapping commitments, including The Hundred and Australia’s upcoming Test series against Bangladesh in mid-August. Due to contractual reasons, the team is likely to compete under the name “Perth Scorchers XI,” similar to the arrangement used by Hobart Hurricanes in the previous edition. Beyond the competition itself, the tournament may also serve as a strategic opportunity for officials from the Western Australia Cricket Association to engage with potential investors. Cricket Australia is reportedly considering partial privatisation of the Big Bash League by selling stakes in franchises, following a model similar to that adopted by England’s domestic structure. The GSL has received backing from the Guyanese government, though it has also drawn criticism from climate activists, who have described it as a “sportswashing” initiative due to sponsorship ties with oil company ExxonMobil.
