The Supreme Court on Monday disposed of a petition filed by Gitanjali J. Angmo, the wife of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA). The court observed that no issues remained for consideration in the matter. A bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and P.B. Varale noted that the Central government had already revoked its detention order against Wangchuk on March 14. In view of this development, the bench stated that there was nothing left to adjudicate in the case. Earlier, the apex court had asked the Centre whether there was any possibility of reconsidering Wangchuk’s detention, particularly in light of his health condition. The Centre had informed the court on March 14 that it had withdrawn Wangchuk’s detention under the NSA with immediate effect, nearly six months after his arrest. The detention had followed violent protests in Leh, during which four people lost their lives. Wangchuk was taken into custody on September 26, 2025, two days after protests erupted in Leh over demands for statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The protests had resulted in injuries to more than 45 people, including 22 police personnel.
