Census 2027 to Collect Details on Caste, Religion, Education, Employment and More

The Central Government has released a list of 40 questions for the upcoming Census 2027. The questionnaire will seek a wide range of information, including a person's name, occupation, religion, language, number of children, mobile number, Aadhaar and passport details. Caste will also be included in the Census. People will be asked to provide information about whether they belong to a Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) or another caste. According to the information provided, this will be the first time after Independence that caste details of all communities will be recorded in the Census. Questions to Be Asked in Census 2027 The 40 questions will cover the following details: Name of the person Relationship with the head of the household Sex Date of birth and age in completed years Current marital status Age at marriage in completed years Name of spouse Religion Stated nationality Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) or caste Details of father Details of mother Disability Mother tongue and other languages known Literacy and digital literacy status Attendance at an educational institution Highest level of education completed and stream/subject Whether the person worked at any time during the previous year Category of economic activity Occupation Type of industry, trade or service Category of worker Non-economic activity for marginal, semi-marginal and non-workers Seeking work or availability for work for marginal, semi-marginal and non-workers Commuting to the place of work Place of birth Place of last residence Reason for migration from one place to another Duration of stay in the present village or town since last migration Permanent residential address Number of surviving children, applicable to currently married, widowed, divorced and separated women Total number of children ever born alive, applicable to currently married, widowed, divorced and separated women Number of children born alive during the last one year, applicable to currently married women Place of COVID-19 vaccination Total number of bank accounts Mobile number, if available Aadhaar number, if available Voter ID number, if available Passport number, if the person holds an Indian passport Availability of a driving licence The questions related to children will specifically seek information from currently married, widowed, divorced and separated women regarding the number of surviving children and the total number of children born alive. Currently married women will also be asked about the number of children born alive during the previous year. The questionnaire also includes several employment-related details, such as economic activity, occupation, type of industry, trade or service, worker category and commuting to the workplace. Information related to migration will cover the person's place of birth, previous place of residence, reason for migration and the duration of stay in the current village or town. The Census 2027 questionnaire will therefore cover personal, social, educational, employment, migration and identification-related information as part of the exercise.
