A Canadian citizen of Punjabi origin has been sentenced to 240 months (20 years) in federal prison for leading a criminal organization involved in smuggling narcotics from the United States into Canada. According to officials, the organization trafficked hundreds of kilograms of methamphetamine and cocaine with an estimated value of up to 17 million US dollars within a period of about one month. According to a release issued by the United States Attorney's Office, 63-year-old Guramrit Sidhu of Brampton, Ontario, was sentenced by United States District Judge John A. Kronstadt. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also confirmed details of the sentencing in connection with the drug trafficking case. Sidhu had pleaded guilty on March 26 to one count of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise and has remained in federal custody since October 2024. As outlined in his plea agreement, Sidhu led an organization that smuggled narcotics from the United States into Canada for distribution between September 2020 and February 2023. Between September 13, 2022, and October 24, 2022, he coordinated the distribution of eight separate drug shipments, involving approximately 523 kilograms of methamphetamine and 347 kilograms of cocaine, all of which were seized by law enforcement agencies. Authorities estimated the wholesale value of the seized drugs at 15 million to 17 million US dollars. Investigators stated that after acquiring large quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine in the United States, Sidhu arranged for the narcotics to be transported into Canada using long-haul semi-trucks for further distribution. The investigation further revealed that Sidhu provided couriers with telephone numbers and currency note serial numbers to be used as identification "tokens" during deliveries and transportation. He and his associates later collected the narcotics from various locations across Canada for onward distribution. Sidhu is the eighth defendant in the case to plead guilty. Several other accused individuals have also admitted to criminal charges and have received federal prison sentences ranging from 27 months to 108 months. The investigation was conducted by the FBI, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Interagency Metropolitan Police Apprehension Crime Task Force (LA IMPACT), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the United States Customs and Border Protection, and law enforcement authorities in Mexico. The release also stated that the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) provided significant assistance during the investigation. The Department of Justice's Office of International Affairs worked closely with Canadian authorities to facilitate Sidhu's arrest and extradition in October 2024.
