Kalita Majhi Secures Historic Win from Ausgram Seat

In a remarkable and inspiring political development, Kalita Majhi, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, has secured a decisive victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Contesting from the Ausgram constituency, she polled 1,07,692 votes and defeated her nearest rival, Shyama Prasanna Lohar of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), by a margin of 12,535 votes. This victory is particularly significant as Kalita Majhi had also contested from the same seat in the 2021 Assembly elections but lost by 11,815 votes to a TMC candidate. Recognizing her grassroots connection and local credibility, the BJP fielded her again, a decision that ultimately resulted in a major electoral success. Before entering politics, Kalita Majhi led a life marked by simplicity and struggle. A resident of Guskara municipality, she worked as a domestic help in four different households for several years, performing cleaning and cooking duties. Her monthly income ranged between ₹2,500 and ₹4,000. Her husband, Subrata Majhi, works as a plumber, while their son recently appeared for his Class 12 examinations. Families she worked for over two decades reportedly treated her like a family member, even as a daughter, and have expressed pride in her achievement. After being elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, Kalita Majhi outlined her priorities for the development of her constituency. She emphasized serving backward communities and ensuring the availability of paved roads and clean drinking water in every household. She also expressed her intention to establish a hospital in the area so that residents do not have to travel to Bardhaman for basic medical treatment. Additionally, she pledged to implement key central government schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, promote the use of solar panels for electricity, and advocate for women’s safety and empowerment. Kalita Majhi’s victory forms part of a larger political wave in West Bengal, where the BJP secured a significant mandate by winning 206 out of 294 seats, achieving a two-thirds majority to form the government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the victory, calling it a strong example of grassroots democracy. Her journey from working in kitchens to becoming a legislator has now emerged as a powerful symbol of changing political dynamics in West Bengal, demonstrating that determination and perseverance can enable an ordinary individual to achieve remarkable success in public life.
