In a significant humanitarian gesture, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Mohali, Kulwant Singh, has announced that he will sponsor the complete five-year medical education expenses for three meritorious students from economically weaker families who recently qualified the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The lawmaker committed to funding a total of approximately Rs 30.5 lakh to cover tuition and hostel fees, ensuring the money is deposited directly into the students' respective bank accounts on a semester-by-semester basis. The initiative comes following a report published in Punjabi Tribune on September 1 titled 'Dreams Shattered Before Fees', which highlighted the financial hurdles faced by aspiring medical candidates. The report prompted roughly two dozen donors to offer assistance to needy students. Contacting the publication to share his decision, MLA Kulwant Singh confirmed his pledge to support these three scholars throughout their medical degree programs. All three beneficiaries completed their schooling at state-run Meritorious Schools. According to details shared by their teacher, Manjit Singh, the funding will directly assist candidates across different medical colleges. Mehakdeep Singh, a resident of Alamwala village in Sri Muktsar Sahib, secured admission to Gian Sagar Medical College. While his total course and hostel expenses amount to roughly Rs 32 lakh, he qualifies for an Rs 11 lakh scholarship due to his Dalit background and will take a loan of Rs 7.5 lakh. MLA Kulwant Singh will cover the remaining balance of Rs 13.5 lakh. Notably, Mehakdeep’s family had previously been forced to sell their cow to arrange initial fee payments. Similarly, Aman Singh from Malout, whose father works as a laborer in an iron factory, gained admission to the medical college in Faridkot. Belonging to an Backward Class (OBC) background, Aman's complete tuition and hostel costs of around Rs 14 lakh will now be paid by the legislator. The third student, Sumandeep Kaur from Hauz Gandhar village in Fazilka, qualified for a scholarship under the Dalit category; MLA Kulwant Singh will cover her Rs 3 lakh hostel fees, as she has already paid her admission fee. Expressing deep gratitude, the parents of the students noted that this financial support has breathed new life into their children's aspirations. Speaking on his decision, MLA Kulwant Singh stated that hardworking youth represent the future of Punjab and the pride of society, adding that their entry into the medical profession is a positive sign and assuring that financial constraints will not be allowed to dim their potential in the future.
