WHO Monitoring Hantavirus Spread on Atlantic Voyage, Multiple Suspected Cases
The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday confirmed that it is monitoring and supporting a public health incident aboard a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean, where an outbreak of hantavirus has been reported. The outbreak has resulted in three deaths and several suspected infections. In a statement shared on X, the WHO said that one case of hantavirus infection has been laboratory-confirmed, while five additional cases are currently under investigation. Among the six affected individuals, three have died and one patient is currently in intensive care in South Africa. The organization stated that investigations are ongoing, including further laboratory testing and epidemiological analysis. Medical care and support are being provided to both passengers and crew members on board, while genetic sequencing of the virus is also underway. Hantavirus is typically transmitted to humans through contact with rodent urine or droppings. It can cause severe respiratory illness and, in rare instances, may spread between humans. Due to the seriousness of the infection, close medical monitoring and supportive care are essential. The outbreak has been reported on the expedition cruise vessel MV Hondius, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions. According to its published itinerary, the ship departed from Ushuaia in southern Argentina on March 20 and was scheduled to conclude its journey in Cape Verde on May 4. The 107.6-meter vessel is designed to carry 170 passengers across 80 cabins and is staffed by 57 crew members, 13 guides, and one doctor. Among those affected is a 69-year-old British national who is currently receiving intensive care treatment in Johannesburg, South Africa. Authorities have confirmed that one case is laboratory-verified, while five others remain suspected and under examination. The WHO also said it is coordinating with member states and the ship’s operators to arrange medical evacuation for two symptomatic passengers. In addition, a comprehensive public health risk assessment is being conducted for those still on board the vessel. The agency confirmed that national focal points have been notified under international health regulations, and a formal disease outbreak news report will be issued for public dissemination.
